🔴 2020 COVID crash — ₹68/kg avg (fell to ₹35 at peak lockdown)·+143% recovery from 2020 low to 2026
What Happened — Key Events That Shaped Meat Prices (2019–2026)
2019–20🐷African Swine Fever wipes out China's pig herd
ASF eliminated ~40% of China's pigs — the world's largest pork market. China became a massive importer, driving global pork and substitute meat prices higher across Asia.
Mar 2020🦠COVID-19 collapses demand overnight
Slaughterhouse closures, restaurant shutdowns, and panic-buying created wild price swings. India's broiler price crashed from ₹82 to under ₹40/kg at peak lockdown. Global supply chains broke.
2021📈Post-vaccine demand surge — the great restocking
As economies reopened, meat demand rebounded sharply. Processors couldn't scale fast enough. FAO Meat Index jumped 12 points in a year. India broiler bounced back above ₹100/kg.
Feb 2022⚔️Russia–Ukraine war triggers feed cost crisis
Ukraine & Russia supply 30%+ of global wheat and 15% of maize exports. War halted shipments — global feed grain prices surged 40%. Poultry and pork production costs spiked globally within weeks.
2022🐦Bird flu (HPAI) culls 100M+ birds in US & EU
Worst avian influenza outbreak on record. US alone culled 58M birds — pushing US egg and chicken prices to record highs. EU poultry supply tightened sharply. India largely unaffected but import prices rose.
2023⚖️Feed cost normalisation — markets rebalance
Grain prices eased as Black Sea grain deal enabled some Ukrainian exports. Global meat prices pulled back ~7% from 2022 peak. India saw its most stable broiler pricing period in years.
2024🐃India cements #1 position in global buffalo meat exports
India exported over 1.5 million tonnes of buffalo meat (carabeef), surpassing all competitors. Vietnam, Malaysia & Egypt are the largest buyers. Rising export demand began pulling domestic buffalo meat prices upward — a trend that continues into 2026.
2025–26🌍South Asia becomes a global livestock pricing force
Brazil dominates beef & chicken exports. India leads in buffalo meat & is Asia's fastest-growing poultry market. India's broiler prices now closely mirror Brazilian export benchmarks — a sign of deep global market integration.
Key Market Drivers — July 2026
🌽
Feed Cost Pressure
Global maize & soybean meal prices up 8% YoY — pushing poultry and pork production costs higher across all markets.
🌡️

🚢
Trade Flows
Brazil consolidating dominance in beef & chicken exports. China's import appetite the key swing factor for pork prices.

Strong USD making US meat expensive for importers. Brazilian Real weakness keeping South American exports competitive.

Frequently Asked Questions
What affects global meat prices today?+
Feed costs (corn and soybean meal — tracked on CBOT) are the biggest driver, representing 65–70% of production cost. The Ukraine war (2022) caused the single biggest feed cost spike in decades.
Which countries export the most meat?+
Brazil leads global beef and processed chicken exports. India is the world's #1 buffalo meat (carabeef) exporter at ~1.5 million tonnes/year. The USA dominates pork and beef trade. Thailand and Brazil compete in processed poultry exports. Australia is the primary supplier of premium chilled beef to Asia.
