2022🐦HPAI Bird Flu — worst US outbreak on record
The US culled 58M+ birds including 43M egg-laying hens. US dozen egg price hit $4.82 in December 2022 — a 138% increase in one year. This was the single biggest supply shock to egg markets in modern history.
2022⚔️Ukraine war pushes feed costs up 40% — egg margins collapse
Grain prices surged after Russia's invasion. Layer feed costs rose sharply in US, EU and India. While retail prices rose, producers initially absorbed costs — triggering a flurry of flock reductions that worsened the HPAI impact.
